Media Link: MFKR Photo Mantage (5:32)  There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. For this video supplement, I've created a photo MAN-tage of images from the Men's Fall Knitting Retreat from 2008 & 2009 An original composition called "Long Live Happiness" from the band "A Night of Serious Drinking" was used for this video. The band is sadly no longer making music, but I still love this song, and their work in general, to pieces. Jared Flood, better known to the knitting world as BrooklynTweed, is a much admired and sought-after designer, blogger, teacher & photographer. He truly is a one-man, A-to-Z fiber phenom. Jared can spin the yarn; he can design the garment; he can knit it up; and he can photograph it all to perfection, ready for glossy full-color fashion magazines. And, if you're lucky, you can have him show you how to did it. I have a secret suspicion that Jared has eliminated the need for sleep... or cloned himself. At least that's what my ego is hoping. Fiber Beat Video Supplement 8: Doing the Horizontal (Draw) from WonderMike on Vimeo.  In the previous Fiber Beat audio episode 8, "PGR, In A New Way", Priscilla Gibson-Roberts talks about the horizontal draw, a description of arm movements while spinning. In her spinning technique book, "High Whorling", she makes a distinction between draw (what your arms do) such as long draw or short forward draw and draft (what your hands do) as in woolen vs. worsted drafting. In this Fiber Beat Video Supplement #8, I demonstrate the horizontal draw on a drop spindle. The fiber I'm using is A Verb for Keeping Warm baby camel/silk (50/50) in the "French Monk's Finest" colorway. Episode 8: PGR, In a New Way (featuring Priscilla Gibson-Roberts) Media Link: PGR, In a New Way (30:32)  There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. Meeting your gurus can be a bit nerve-wracking, but in this case, it was more like a homecoming. This episode’s guest is truly an icon in the knitting and spinning world: Priscilla Gibson-Roberts. She has written books about traditional & historical sweater design, top-whorl spindle spinning and ethnic sock construction. In all that Priscilla produces, there is a love and respect for doing things “in the old way”. Fortunately, for us, she’s also interested in preserving their technical details and sharing them with future generations. I spoke with Priscilla during breaks in her lecture schedule and my classes at Sock Summit 2009. We actually stayed until the lights went off, but I would have continued recording in total darkness had I been giving the chance. We, as crafters, artists and artisans, are indeed richer and more knowledgeable, thanks in large part to the work of PGR and Deb Robson (Nomad Press). I feel honored to have met them both. Welcome new listeners and viewers to our next Video Supplement to Fiber Beat, Number 4. This episode we feature the unvention of Sarah Hauschka, The Magic Loop. This knitting technique allows one to work circularly on any size project whose circumference measurement is smaller than that of the total needle length. The bonuses are that you only use one long circular needle and you eliminate those pesky ladders that can form when using double pointed needles (DPNs). Episode 4: Skacel-ebrate! (featuring Karin Skacel)  There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. Skacel Knitting is a family-owned business that has been going strong for over two decades. They introduced Addi Turbo needles to the United States but they also distribute a range of fine yarns, patterns and tools for knitting, crocheting and, now, felting. This episode I talked with Karin Skacel, the current chief of Skacel Knitting at Stitches West in the spring of 2009. I also spoke with Brian Kohler on the telephone about an ambitious sock knitting project he has begun with a specially designed Addi Turbo circular needle. A bit of trivia for the active listeners. Near the end of the interview, I ask Karin a somewhat odd question about what makes Skacel "delightful". The reason for this construction was that I originally conceived of the new podcast being named "Fiber Delight" (like Rapper's Delight, my first 12" single AND where I took my online/Ravelry name). But, I decided to go with a more film noir name, "Fiber Beat" and the idea of asking the "delightful" question fell away. In this instance, I really liked Karin's answer because it speaks to her business philosophy which I personally find.... delightful. So, I kept it in the final edit. I hope you like it!
